Step 6: Apply to Study Abroad Through GEO
Once you have completed your Abroad 101 materials and selected your first choice program, your application will be opened by the GEO staff. When you log in, you will see a checklist indicating all information needed to apply. This application is necessary to study abroad through UNM.
Deadlines: Please note that semester applications are reviewed on a rolling basis between GEO’s PRIORITY and FINAL deadlines. Students who submit their applications by the PRIORITY deadline have the best chance of being accepted for their first choice program.
Fall or Academic Year: PRIORITY deadline – Nov. 15, FINAL deadline – Feb. 15
Spring or Calendar Year: PRIORITY deadline – June 15, FINAL deadline – Sept. 15
Summer Deadline: March 1
Step 7: Meet With Your Academic Advisor
Plan early! Once you have selected a program, you should meet with your academic advisor to make sure the program satisfies your academic requirements and keeps you on track for graduation. Before you make the appointment with your academic advisor, make sure you have done some research on your own and with your study abroad advisor on the courses you would like to take abroad.
Review the GEO Credit Transfer page to prepare for your advising meeting.
Step 8: Apply to Your Host Program
After submitting your GEO application, you will receive notice if you’ve been accepted to study abroad. Students who are accepted will then be instructed to apply directly to their host program or university. This application may include online or mail-in documents, to be completed entirely by the student. Check the program’s website or check in with your study abroad advisor for more information.
Step 9: Get Ready To Go!
After you have been accepted by GEO to study abroad, a new list of requirements will appear in your UNM Study Abroad account. Complete your application to your host program first, then review the items remaining on your GEO application and complete as soon as possible. These items may include: applying for your visa (if necessary), making an appointment with the SHAC Travel Clinic, purchasing health insurance, buying your plane ticket, and getting ready to go!
You will also attend a MANDATORY Pre-Departure Orientation during the semester before you leave. Be sure to attend this session and review the materials presented.
