Passports
Passport Acceptance Center at UNM
Students and community members can now apply for and renew their U.S. passports at the UNM bookstore! For more information, please visit the Passport Acceptance Center website. Please remember:
- Apply for a new passport as soon as possible\to avoid travel and visa delays.
- Do not travel with a passport that will expire within 6 months of your return date. It is a best practice to have at least 1 year before expiration for some countries. When in doubt, renew!
- If you are not a U.S. citizen, please consult with the Embassy of your country of citizenship on passport details.
All U.S. citizens traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport book to re-enter the United States.
All U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for a U.S. passport well in advance of anticipated travel. Wait times are currently 4-6 weeks for routine service and 2-3 weeks for expedited service, but these are average wait times and can fluctuate depending on the number of applicants. U.S. citizens can visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs website or call 1-877-487-2778 for information on how to apply for their passports. UNM students may apply for or renew their passport through the UNM Bookstore’s Passport Acceptance Center on the main campus.
SOME COUNTRIES REQUIRE THAT YOUR PASSPORT BE VALID FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS FOLLOWING THE DATE OF YOUR PROJECTED EXIT FROM THOSE COUNTRIES, so be sure to check the expiration date on your passport and renew it at your earliest convenience if necessary to meet the entry requirements of your destination country or countries. Generally speaking you can find the entry requirements on the pertinent Embassy’s website (see, e.g., the Entry Requirements webpage of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C.).
U.S. legal permanent residents need to ensure that they have the proper documentation to allow reentry into the United States.
